Ashwagandha, explained
Margaux Verger
What are adaptogenic plants?
Adaptogens are plants that have traditionally been used to support the body during demanding periods.¹
The word comes from the idea of adaptation. Not escaping stress, avoiding effort or trying to become perfectly calm all the time. It is about supporting the body as it responds to what life brings: a busy season, emotional pressure, physical exertion, poor sleep, travel, change or simply a very full schedule.
Adaptogens are often chosen by people looking for a more balanced kind of support. Something that fits into everyday life and works with the body’s natural rhythm, rather than creating an instant feeling of stimulation.
Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Ginseng and Holy Basil are some of the best-known adaptogenic plants. Each has its own history, character and traditional use.¹
Meet Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is a root used for centuries in Ayurvedic tradition.²
It is one of the best-known adaptogenic plants and is sometimes called Indian ginseng, although it does not belong to the ginseng family. Today, it can be found in capsules, powders, teas and functional drinks, but its history began with the root itself.²³
What is inside the root?
Ashwagandha root naturally contains many different plant compounds.²
The best known are withanolides, a family of naturally occurring compounds that have become a major focus of Ashwagandha research. But they are not the only compounds present in the plant.²³
The root also contains alkaloids and other naturally occurring plant compounds that contribute to its wider botanical profile. Ashwagandha is therefore not simply one isolated molecule, but a complex plant with a long traditional history and a growing body of clinical research behind it.²⁴
The naturally occurring amount of withanolides can vary between plants and preparations. This is why some Ashwagandha extracts are standardized: to provide a clearly defined and consistent amount of withanolides in each serving.³
Why has Ashwagandha become so popular?
Because it speaks to what many people are looking for now: a more grounded way to support their well-being.
Ashwagandha is commonly used for:
-
Supporting the body through everyday stress
-
Relaxation and emotional balance
-
Calm focus and mental clarity
-
Sleep quality and recovery
-
Physical resilience during active periods
-
General everyday well-being
These different aspects of well-being are closely connected. Stress can affect sleep, sleep can affect focus, and insufficient recovery can influence both physical and emotional balance.
For a closer look at the clinical research behind these areas, read Ashwagandha and modern stress: what research explores.
Whole root or extract?
Ashwagandha can be used in several forms.
Whole root powder is made by drying and finely grinding the root. It remains close to the plant’s original form, but its naturally occurring withanolide content can vary.
Ashwagandha root extract is a more concentrated preparation made by extracting compounds from the root. When an extract is standardized, it is produced to provide a defined and consistent amount of withanolides.
Neither form is automatically better. They simply serve different purposes.
For Ritual 01, we chose a root extract standardized to 5% withanolides because we wanted a precise and consistent formula that reflects the preparations commonly used in modern clinical research exploring Ashwagandha for stress, sleep, mental clarity and physical recovery.³
Each serving of Ritual 01 contains 300 mg of Ashwagandha root extract and provides 15 mg of withanolides.
Doses between 300 and 600 mg are commonly explored in clinical research. One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined precisely 300 mg of Ashwagandha root extract providing 15 mg of withanolides per day. Compared with placebo, participants experienced improvements in perceived stress, sleep quality, psychological well-being, memory and focus, alongside lower cortisol levels.⁵
For us, this choice is about precision and consistency: bringing a clearly defined, research-aligned amount of Ashwagandha into a warm and enjoyable daily ritual.
Why put Ashwagandha in a latte?
Because taking care of yourself should not mean giving up pleasure.
We created Ritual 01 to make wellness feel more accessible, beautiful and easy to return to. Instead of another capsule or complicated routine, it is a warm, creamy moment you can genuinely look forward to.
We blend Ashwagandha root extract with coconut creamer, inulin, lucuma, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom to create a smooth latte with a naturally rounded taste and warming spice.
The result is a caffeine-free ritual that feels comforting and satisfying, while still fitting into a more intentional approach to well-being.
The ayae approach
At ayae, we believe wellness does not need to be extreme to be meaningful.
We believe in plant-based ingredients, precise formulations and rituals that work in real life. In taking five minutes before work, after a workout or in the middle of the day. In choosing something that feels grounding and supportive.
Ashwagandha is at the heart of Ritual 01 because it represents exactly that.
A root with a long history. A place in modern research. And a simple way to come back to yourself, one cup at a time.
